Go where you can be weird

Why being yourself at work leads to better opportunities

Something looks different around here. Oh that’s right, your girl got a glow up. New logo, some new colors, new type etc. All thanks to my talented friend and designer, Nancy Ruzow.

Same personality, just a fresher, more modern look and feel. Something more ME. What do you think?

Go where you can be weird

I get a lot of messages.

People who want to connect.

People who want to work for me.

Some want to work with me.

Most are generic.

Many are AI.

Many are cut and paste and not even relevant.

Clearly people aren’t even doing the littlest bit of homework.

But every so often I get a note that makes me notice. One that gets me inspired as a writer.

It was personalized, it felt like she actually read my content and it flattered but not in a pandering way.

And moreover, it resulted in this nugget, which she shared with me after our call:

“…giving people permission to follow their gut and not censor their own brains — we hire interesting weirdos. There’s something unusual about everybody that we employ, but the tendency when you work at a larger organization is to try to flatten yourself out to figure out how to succeed.”

This quote from David Haskell of NY Magazine is exactly what I tell my clients to look for.

Find the place where you can be weird.

You can be you.

And where they not only encourage it, they seek it out.

And moreover, where you won’t flatten yourself.

Because doing that will never lead to success. At least not lasting success.

Sure you might ascend for a little while, but at the expense of pretty much everything you hold dear.

And while not all of us are weird, or identify as weird, we all know where our quirks and qualities will be appreciated.

Find that place.

Find those clients.

Find those customers.

Find that employer.

I promise you the wait will be worth it.

Speaking of worth it

Who remembers Flashback Friday?

And while this post isn't a flashback, I'm flashing it back to the person who actually invited me to host my first in person workshop. In her kitchen. Just four people. Maybe even three!

But Hayley Foster believed in me. Thanks to a fortuitous meeting (I was on a panel at a LinkedIn Local event hosted by Beth Granger) it was friendship at first site. Or first listen. Hayley resonated with my Personality Branding perspective and knew her coaching clients would feel the same.

But one of the most magical things about entrepreneurship is the journey. The journey you're always on and then watching someone get there. And now I get to share this incredible event that Hayley's hosting.

Not in her kitchen, but in a castle. You know, no biggie.

What is a Genuine Personality Brand?

A Genuine Personality Brand is the version of your professional identity that actually sounds and feels like you. It brings your quirks, values, voice, and point of view into your work without forcing you to overshare or perform. Basically, you stop flattening yourself into something bland and start showing people why you’re worth noticing.

How is showing your personality different from being unprofessional?

Showing your personality doesn’t mean saying every thought out loud or turning every meeting into an open-mic night. It means communicating like a real person instead of hiding behind corporate jargon, copied messaging, or a personality-free professional mask. You can be polished and still sound like yourself.

Who is Personality Branding for?

Personality Branding is for business owners, employees, leaders, and professionals who feel like they’re editing themselves to fit in. It’s especially helpful if your current messaging feels generic, your workplace rewards sameness, or you’re struggling to find clients, customers, or employers who appreciate what makes you different.

What results can I expect from embracing my personality at work?

You can expect clearer messaging, stronger connections, and more confidence in how you present yourself. You may also find it easier to attract clients, customers, collaborators, or employers who genuinely get you. Not everyone will love your personality, and that’s kind of the point.

Why does being yourself at work lead to better opportunities?

Being yourself makes it easier for the right people to recognize you. When you stop sanding down every interesting edge, your communication becomes more memorable, relatable, and trustworthy. The goal isn’t to be weird for attention. It’s to find the places where your particular kind of weird is considered an asset.
