If you’re choosing to have a presence on a social media platform, it’s important that you create a community of business friends and potential clients. These are people who will support and encourage you. How do you create that community?
Let’s first talk about the problem.
Connecting can be hard.
Commenting may be even harder.
Content creation can be a challenge.
But it’s the combination of these three that’s most effective in creating a community.
You want to grow your audience and attract clients without getting stuck in the overwhelm of what to post or how to say it. But you may not know who to connect with. Once you connect, you may not know what to say in the comments, so you don’t say anything.
You want to be consistent but there isn’t enough time for everything — especially content creation. When you finally do have time, you may feel stressed or unsure what to say.
It may feel like you’re establishing a social media presence that doesn’t truly reflect who you are.
Are you telling yourself, “I’ll post next week.”
Or waiting for inspiration to tell you what to write.
Or posting something just to be posting — but it isn’t what you really want to say.
Transformation superpowers
You have transformation superpowers that will help you. Strategic connecting, commenting, and content creation are your transformation superpowers!
What do I mean by transformation? When you share your message, you’re inspiring people to action. You’re helping them to change something for the better and to make a positive impact. What’s the purpose of your business? That’s your message, that’s your impact.
Create a strategy
So why create a strategy?
Without a strategy, it’s hard to build momentum.
It can be hard to build a community of potential clients and business friends.
Expecting to come up with ideas simply through “inspiration” or thinking the time will magically appear, probably won’t happen.
It also helps you avoid wasting your limited time and attention.
Create a strategy with intentional ideas that reflect who you are and what your message is. A strategy allows you to work smarter because you’ll have content created, taking the pressure off of relying on “inspiration” or trying to find extra time. It allows your ideas to, borrowing a metaphor from the butterfly, emerge from the cocoon and become strong because the content is authentic to you.
The butterfly’s purpose
Butterflies create a ripple effect. As they travel from flower to flower, they don’t just take in the nutrients needed, they also give through pollination — this helps the flowers to bloom.
Consider looking at every profile on your social media platform as a flower. When you make a comment, it’s like pollinating that flower. When you post content, you’re sharing something valuable, just like the butterfly does.
A butterfly shows us what transformation looks like. When you choose to share from your heart, you start to create a transformation to help others.
The Butterfly Strategy
To help you be like the butterfly and create your own transformation, I created the Butterfly Strategy. With it, you can be intentional, purposeful, and confident, which can transform connections into community.
In the Butterfly Strategy, the butterfly represents these three:
Body = Connecting
Left wing = Commenting
Right wing = Content
BODY = CONNECTING
Create a ripple effect through creating connections.
Start making meaningful connections.
Just like a butterfly helps flowers bloom, you can help others thrive through connecting with people by supporting and encouraging them.
LEFT WING = COMMENTING
“Pollinate” your network through positive commenting.
Spark conversations by engaging with other people’s posts with thoughtful comments.
Your comments can be the “seeds” – the beginning of connecting with incredible people.
RIGHT WING = CONTENT
Transformation starts with sharing your message.
Start small by creating “micro-content” — short posts with one main idea.
You don’t have to post every day. Choose to consistently post two or three times a week with both “business” and “personality” posts.
Apply the Butterfly Strategy
Here are three tips to help you get started:
Tip for connecting
Concentrate on “who” rather than just the numbers. It’s the people who make the difference! You want to create a community.
Learn about a new skill — find people doing things you’d like to learn more about, maybe adjacent to your field, maybe not.
Find people who could potentially become a business friend. Why do I say that? Because friends know, like, and trust you. They’ll be the ones to support you.
Tip for commenting
When commenting: be generous, be kind, give lots of praise, and highlight others. Start creating a positive community because it’s the people who make the difference and the impact of that on your business.
If you’re having trouble as to what to say on someone else’s post, here’s my tip:
Pretend you’re already friends when commenting and comment what you’d say to that friend!
Tip for content creation
Creating content is another opportunity that allows you to soar in a different way. It gives people a chance to get to know you, what you believe, and what your message is.
Consistency over quantity.
Consistency doesn’t mean posting every day!
If you don’t like to write or don’t have time, find someone who can create content for you. Choose someone who’ll make sure the content is in your voice, authentic to you, so that you can start building relationships and create a community of business friends and potential clients.
Choose to be a butterfly
Emerge from the cocoon believing in yourself, asking others to help you become strong in areas you need help in, and then take flight, choosing to serve others.
Start a ripple effect through creating connections.
“Pollinate” your network through positive commenting.
Transform others by sharing your message.
Remember:
Strategic connecting, commenting, and content creation are your transformation superpowers to help you make the biggest impact and the best way, I think, is to create your community.

How can I make genuine connections on social media without feeling salesy?
Focus on people, not numbers. Approach others with curiosity, encouragement, and support — just like building friendships offline. This helps you create a community of business friends and potential clients.
What should I comment on someone else’s post if I don’t know what to say?
Pretend you’re already friends with them. Share encouragement, praise, or thoughtful reflections on what they wrote. Authentic, kind comments spark conversations and open doors for deeper connections.
How often should I post content to grow my audience?
Consistency is more important than frequency. Two to three posts per week — mixing business and personality-driven content — is enough to build momentum and show up authentically without burning out.
